Custom Made Hand Gun Box
|

This special box was built for a client who served in the US Special
Forces in Vietnam. He became the holder of an emblematic hand gun
from his troop, and felt it deserved an appropriate storage vessel.
His father served in the WWII equivalent of the special forces, and
the box also houses some bullets from his father's service. I actually
wrestled with my pacifist tendencies before deciding to make this
piece, but ultimately felt like it was among the most meaningful pieces
I've ever made. The client provided the exquisite quilted maple from
his native Oregon, and also supplied the unusual gold plated hardware.

The inlay work, shown here at about 1.5 X scale, involves nearly
100 pieces, with ebony, holly, satinwood, baliwood, jatoba and Brazilian
tulipwood. This is a great example of the amazing accuracy my CNC
router is capable of. It does help to know what you're doing. The
CNC only does what it's told to do. |

My client provided me with this excellent photo of the box with
its residents in place. He also provided me with a foam model of the
gun to facilitate the correct carving of the recesses. The interior
is flocked. |
