We made this ultimate jewelry chest with beauty and unparallelled
function in mind. Built to last generations, the case is constructed
with tapered sliding dovetail joints joining sides to top and bottom
to sides. The cabinet stores an enormous amount of jewelry, with
eight graduated depth drawers, and two pullout, two sided swiveling
panels, one for necklaces, and one for earrings. The panels are
suspended on a solid wood double glide system that allows them to
be pulled entirely forward of the cabinet enclosure, and then pivoted,
providing perfect visual and manual access to both sides of each
panel. Thus the cabinet doesn't require side clearance to operate,
and doesn't require the user to crane her neck to pick out her selection.
These are made in small batches in various woods.
I plan to make to make like the one in koa, shown above, with
four-way bookmatches of shopsawn veneer for each drawer front. These
cabinets are truly spectacular, with either a pattern of matched
curl and matched figured grain more or less visible depending on
the viewing angle, and rich bookmatched thick veneer side panels
and top all sawn from the same figured koa plank. Drawers and panels
open with sculpted ebony pulls . The drawers are divided up into
different configurations to accommodate different jewelry needs.
