I offer two choices on this maple and walnut end grain chopping block. Above is the plain version. As maple boards frequently are full of color variations (all maple is subject to frequent dark ""character marks," especially visible on the end gain, and the inner part of the tree is invariably darker, and is usually not used ), I decided to turn vice into virtue by making an art deco-look checkered board that alternates darker-streaked maple squares with unblemished sapwood. Both board sits on integral legs, making for a very stable cutting surface, and easy placement of a platter to catch what you cut. The maple squares in the plain version have beautiful, subtle shadings at their edges. The coved ends allow for a comfortable carry to the table.
