Miscellaneous Custom Large Boxes
Walnut Burl Box
This was a commission for a cuff link box. The box has a leather lined tray and compartments below to hold 36 pairs of cufflinks in individual compartments, and spaces for some larger items as well. Its built from walnut burl veneer edged with black ebony. The tray was laboriously lined with tan suede. The ebony banding containing the beautiful walnut burl with the leather lining made a big hit with a very fussy client!
Tea Box
This was a fairly simple custom box to build, as I was working on a batch of koa dovetailed boxes at the time, and made this custom tea box along with them.
Carved Celtic Box
This custom box is walnut with what I refer to as a landscape bookmatch on top, and Celtic knot work type carving on the lid and sides.
Custom Engraved Jewelry Box
This bird's-eye maple custom made box is engraved with the client's son's business logo. A one-off box like this can be made for starting at about $200.
Hawaiian Bouquet Jewelry Box
Here is a corner detail, of an open lid, showing the mango butterfly spline that secures each corner. These are driven into the miter joints at assembly from the bottom, forming a joint that needs no glue (I glue them anyway). Another extraordinary detail on an extraordinary jewelry box.

Hawaiian Bouquet Jewelry Box
Since koa has such bold and variable figure, it's especially important to match grain, and select wood carefully. My koa boxes are often made by re-sawing a piece long enough for one short side and one long side, and so I get a perfect grain match all the way around, with two book-matched corners, and two simple continuations of the grain. Pictured is a book-matched corner.
