Inlaid Tree Wall Hung Cabinet

This photo shows the doors open to reveal the swing out earring rack. Inside the dovetailed birds-eye maple cabinet,  a hinged earring storage rack holds over 100 pairs of earrings, with two bins below for pins and miscellany. Behind the earring rack, four ebony pegs are long enough for several bracelets each, and nine hand forged iron hooks hold necklaces, with a bin below. The dovetailed drawer is fitted out with a two slot ring pad in front with more storage behind. The drawer features a magnetic  stop that allows  stability at full extension, and also easy removal from the cabinet entirely.

Inlaid Tree Wall Hung Cabinet

 This cabinet will hold a very large collection of jewelry --beyond its obvious focus on earrings. It hangs on a plywood plate that mounts to a wall with three screws, and the cabinet can be further secured with a single screw through the back that prevents both accidental damage or unwanted intentional removal. The cabinet employs an invisible magnetic locking system for both the doors and drawer. The cabinet thus provides a significant level of security beyond preventing the casual theft by a maid or teenage daughter's friend.  A would-be thief would need crowbar to remove the cabinet from the wall or gain entry.

Inlaid Tree Wall Hung Cabinet

Here's a detail at about actual size on this shot, and magnified with the enlargement. The Oregon maple burl has beautiful depth. The doors are made from shopsawn veneer, several times the thickness of commercial veneer, especially important as the burl inevitably has small pockets or voids, which with commercial veneer need to be filled to avoid them being filled with glue. The snow is holly, the world's whitest wood, and the little pockets at the branch vertices and falling flakes create a sense of movement. The rich black of the ebony against the lustrous depth of the burl creates a striking contrast, and the falling snow adds movement to the mix. This is one of those visual delights that's hard to capture in a photograph. I showed (and sold) a similar cabinet at a show last year, and  the cabinet literally pulled people into the booth.

Hawaiian Bouquet Jewelry Box

Since koa has such bold and variable figure, it's especially important to match grain, and select wood carefully. My koa boxes are often made by re-sawing a piece long enough for one short side and one long side, and so I get a perfect grain match all the way around, with two book-matched corners, and two simple continuations of the grain. Pictured is a book-matched corner.
